Multidoses create sizeable data processing security requirements. Each individual user needs to be given the right medicine, and no sensitive personal information can go astray. Itera plays the role of Farmaka's IT department and ensures that multidoses are sent to Farmaka’s customers on time and with the right contents.
Farmaka delivers multidoses to its customers. Multidoses are special packages that together contain all the medication an individual requires over the course of up to one month, with separate pouches containing just the medication that is to be taken at each given time point. Each pouch is clearly marked with the customers' name as well as with the date and time at which it is to be taken, and what medication it contains. Multidoses are specially adapted for each user, and are produced on the basis of a doctor's prescription.

Itera plays the role of Farmaka's IT department, and is responsible for the operations for all of Farmaka's IT systems related to office support and specialist applications. Farmaka's physical production line and related equipment are operated by a third party supplier, with assistance from Itera.
Farmaka's solution has four zones in order to ensure sufficient data security:
• A sensitive zone at Itera
• A secure zone at Itera
• A sensitive zone at Farmaka
• A production solution at Farmaka
The zones are separated from one another using a virtual LAN at the network level as well as a two-zone solution on Citrix terminal servers. Citrix terminal servers, application servers and other application servers (AD/DNS/File/Print etc) run as virtual servers on Itera's virtualisation platform. The customer's database servers run both virtually and as physical servers. All the servers and services are run from Itera's data centre, with Itera wholly and fully responsible for the solution.
Farmaka also has a number of physical machines that are responsible for actually packaging the medicines. These are located in dedicated premises with specific routines for physical access and use. The production solution is operated by Farmaka with support from a third party supplier, whom Itera assists as Farmaka's IT department.
Farmaka is connected to the Norwegian Pharmacy Network (Norsk Apoteknett) via Boots and Espire, and therefore is also connected to the Norwegian Health Network (Norsk HelseNett)
The solution is based on Windows Server 2008R2/2012R2, MS SQL 2008R2/2012R2, Citrix XenApp and VMware 5.1.
Farmaka's solution principally consists of standard services from Microsoft in addition to dedicated specialist applications in the finance, production planning and medicine packing areas.
Farmaka has approximately 30 internal users. It also has approximately 100 users based in pharmacies that are Farmaka customers. These pharmacies are able to log on to the Citrix platform in order to access the specialist Farmaka application.
Multidoses are sent to Farmaka's customers on time and with the right contents thanks to the support of central services that have a high availability rate and a high degree of security. Itera works closely and collaboratively with Farmaka in order to ensure continuity and progress, and to ensure that any incidents that occur on their central operating platform or in Farmaka's production solution are managed efficiently.
