Pelagia is one of the largest companies in pelagic fish processing, and distributes products based on pelagic fish to markets across the world. The company needed a robust solution for collating, reporting and visualising data from various data sources, including from its ERP system. The result was a Microsoft Azure framework with Power BI on top as a visualisation tool.

One of the world’s biggest fish suppliers

Pelagia has production facilities in Norway, Denmark, the UK and Ireland, and is a leading producer of pelagic fish products. Pelagic fish is a term for fish that primarily live in the open ocean, such as herring and mackerel. Pelagia is an important supplier of fish products both for human consumption and as essential ingredients in fish and animal feed, as well as dietary supplements for both humans and animals.

Pelagia works continually to develop new products and is particularly focused on developing ingredients that improve people’s health. It is important to Pelagia that 100% of each fish is used in order to prevent resources from being wasted.

Need for better data compilation

Procurement and sales activities, production, warehousing and distribution – these processes all involve numerous different data sources and generate large quantities of data. For Pelagia, this has led to a significant level of complexity in terms of how it stores and processes data, which its existing systems have not resolved satisfactorily.

Pelagia therefore wanted to put in place a system that would automate the collection of information and ensure a high level of data quality in its reports. In order for it to use its internal reports more efficiently, it also needed higher-quality data visualisation tools, which is to say that a greater emphasis on design and, not least, user insight was required.

“Our existing systems were not working well enough. We were consequently struggling with data quality and with our employees’ needs not being met”, explains Frode Vatne, CIO of Pelagia.

A framework in Azure, linked to Power BI

The solution was to implement a framework based on Azure technology. The framework was required to structure and process data from Pelagia’s different source systems before what are known as ‘cubes’ were built, which were linked to Power BI via Analysis Services.

Itera provided a distributed team that featured Kiev-based SQL and Power BI developers with a Norway-based project manager who worked closely with Pelagia’s system architect and other Pelagia employees.

Itera’s team also featured a business advisor who worked with Pelagia’s business developer to produce the reports Pelagia needed in Power BI.

Better decisions taken more quickly

The result of the project is that Pelagia now has high-quality, user-friendly reports in areas such as finance, sales, warehousing, maintenance and HR. New reports and new functionality designed on the basis of users’ needs, together with improvements to the quality and design of its existing reports, have helped to make Pelagia more efficient.

“The new framework and reports have increased the level of trust our employees have in the data, and they are now in a position to take better decisions more quickly”, comments Frode Vatne, CIO of Pelagia.
