Many organisations are planning to or are have already started to migrate their systems to the cloud, and the major technology platforms have made it simple to get underway.
In many ways, cloud technology is only a tool. Organisations need to start by mapping what they want to achieve by moving to the cloud and what commercial and strategic value they want to generate, and only then to look at how the technology can help them get there.
Itera has developed a robust methodology for this insight-gathering phase to ensure that customers systematically look at everything that needs to be considered before moving an existing solution to the cloud or building a new solution in the cloud. Moving your organization to the cloud can enable you to access new and innovative functionality more quickly. It can also improve your analysis capabilities as the analysis tools that are available are good at handling large quantities of data. The question of security is also important. Microsoft (which offers the Azure cloud platform) invests over USD 1 billion in security every year.
Almost as important as the benefits of starting to use cloud services are the strategic disadvantages of not doing so, and many people would say that we have now reached a tipping point. The level of technical debt of not using cloud services is not going to decrease. Support stopped being offered for as many as 60% of Windows OS server versions in January 2020. Such solutions will have to be upgraded regardless of whether you choose to use the same on-premises delivery model or the cloud.
One big advantage of cloud platforms is that they can be thought of as ecosystems with ready-made frameworks, tools, functions and services available for use by all. The issue is actually knowing what you are doing.
Itera has built a service to address this, which is called Cloud Foundation. This service involves us setting up the right framework for every project that involves migrating or building solutions on a cloud platform. The Cloud Foundation service ensures that security is included in the requirements, that there is a good level of predictability for the staff who work on the solution and, last but not least, that the right framework is set up in order to provide full control over governance and costs. Regardless of the status of your integration platform and the progress you have made so far, we recommend running a Cloud Foundation Set Up workshop, which involves us spending two days going through the ambitions and targets you have for the solutions you are considering building in Azure to ensure a good governance structure and a good cost control framework are in place. This is recommended regardless of whether you already use Azure or are still at the starting line.
